With their fervent enthusiasm and sheer love for what they do, Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales are the loveable design duo behind Romance Was Born.

The crafty pair became firm friends while studying at East Sydney Technical College and after graduation, the pair were selected to attend The Fourth International Support Awards in Italy where they famously turned down internships with John Galliano. Instead, their fashion fairytale had different plans.
The fashion mavericks fused their creative ideas towards launching their own label. A short time later, Romance Was Born. With a love of kitsch Australiana, crafty constructions and a strong passion which permeates their designs, Romance Was Born create clothes that are more than just a sum of their parts - they create a clothing experience. They are much loved for their original larrikin spirit, poking a
cheeky tongue at convention.

Their lavish aesthetic often includes a pastiche of craftwork-like applique, tie-dying and crochet - intricate hand detailed features that set their label apart from the flippant trends of the fashion frenzied crowd.
The fun loving Romance Was Born collections are filled with fabric and colour combinations, creating playful outfits where sparkle, texture and bold prints jostle together with the pair's technical pattern-making wizardry, resulting in a harmonious jamboree of style.

Romance Was Born's entirely Australian production adds another layer of integrity to their label as they insist on supporting the dwindling Australian manufacturing industry. In an industry renowned for compromise and cutting corners, they never do. Through their very personal approach, the inclusion of the community through ongoing collaborations and their overall love of Australia, Romance Was Born have remained honest to their brands distinctive style.
The drama and individuality behind the effervescent design work of Romance Was Born has seen them able to attract and dress the music industry's finest including Bat For Lashes, Cyndi Lauper,Debbie Harry, Lilly Allen, MIA, plus local acts including Architecture in Helsinki and The Presets.

The past three collections have seen them collaborate with Archibald prize winning artist Del Kathryn Barton, providing Romance Was Born with an exclusive treasure trove of digitally printed fabrics. Personality Profile

For the last print advertisement of the season, we decided to stray a bit further from the norm. More so than we usually do.

We have a great customer base that consists of all sorts of people which makes things a lot more interesting in store. We get people from all walks of life, socio-economic backgrounds, sexual preferences, etc, etc. Nothing, however, is more interesting than having a lady that really understands what we do come in and purchase something for herself. Stephanie Liu is one of the few women in Singapore that come in store to pick up the odd Engineered Garments or Wood Wood shirt to add a bit of masculine appeal to her wardrobe. She sticks out like a sore thumb and we're okay with it. We decided to go with such an approach for this issue and so far, it's been approved by many.

Because you're like us and you're week of work just takes it's toll on you.

Those of you that haven't made it down to Tuckshop just yet, make sure you do this Friday for an easy pre-game session. Those of you that make it down most Fridays, keep at it.

This week will mark the 2nd installment of Kinemat taking charge of music for the evening. So expect good things.

Live Fresh Block Party

Thanks to all that made an appearance at the Haji Lane Block Party.

Great to see the street filled with so much life thanks to the ample supply of Tiger Beer, popcorn and donuts.

The party clocked over 1000 people and as usual, the vibe in store was lively. Thanks to all who came by and had a few drinks with us. Good to see all of you under more social circumstances.

We hope you enjoyed the photography that has been displayed upstairs. If not, please do visit us and take a look. They will be up there indefinitely.

Personality Profile

Some of you may have noticed our second print advertisement in this month's issue of Juice Magazine.

This time we chose to feature one of our regular customers who's all sorts of interesting. He started as a regular in store and then turned out to be a staple in our social circle. We are lucky down here to be meeting quality people like himself.

Part DJ, part Architect and part owner of one of the friendliest neighborhood bars in this city, Dean Chew is an all-rounder that we can relate to in store. His extensive knowledge and interest in hip-hop, funk and soul led him and his partners to start up their very own bar in the heart of Tanjong Pagar road where they are able to deliver the finest in comfort food and music. Many understand Tuckshop for what it is and have chosen to put themselves up there most Friday nights as we have. The lack of quality music around also contributed to the founding of Tuckshop and for that reason alone, we can confirm our gratitude towards mediocrity.

Not resting on his laurels, Dean's also a part of the musical duo aptly named "Cosa Nostra". These guys respect the timeless sounds of classic genres of music but push it foward to keep it relevant for modern ears and/or dancefloors. Call it the thinking man's beat if you will.

Dean's got no qualms, concerns, questions or fears for what's going on out there. He's just doing what he thinks he needs to with hope that the music scene will really flourish down here. Flooding the culture with deep, soulful music is his calling and we respect that on many levels. He is funk's most prized bastard.

Interestingly enough, he hand-picked the anti-fit Wood Wood Gemini Pant as the main piece to feature this month. He claims it suits his sensibilities because of the combination of fit and versatility but still mindful of edge. That sort of denim chambray can pretty much work as a denim jean as well as a pant. Bang for your buck goodness.
